This made me so mad. Here is part of an article that I found on the Free Lance Star website. It talks about CGS, but the guy obviously didn't even do much research.
Governor’s School Burden:
How far is too far?
Jeremiah Cole - Associated Press
September 18th, 2005
There has been much debate over the special treatment that is given to local students that attend the Commonwealth Governor’s School, or CGS.
These students are taken out of the normal public school environment, and put into an exclusive institution. Some students attend “CGS” in the morning, and some in the afternoon, but many critics say they should not attend at all.
The Governor’s School students, who come from Spotsylvania, Stafford, and King George, receive benefits that many other children are unable to attain. These benefits include more experienced and well-knowing teachers, a five-school broadcasting system, laptops for every student, and the removed stress of having to take exams.
But what do all these extra benefits cost the school system? A lot, say many concerned parents.
“My child doesn’t go to Governor’s school, or whatever they call it,” said Marian Hemberg, the parent of two high school students, “but I’m still paying my tax money to support these know-it-all kids who do?”
That really doesn’t seem fair, the opponents say. They don’t believe that simply due to the fact that a child is deemed to be “gifted” (or “smarter than the rest,” as the Governor’s School students claim) they should receive more funding for their education.
This is why there is a proposed bill that will make it’s way through the Virginia General Assembly. This bill, called the Higher Education Act, will prohibit the use of public funding for any education that is not strictly standard. Under this new bill, the Governor’s School would be dissolved, SCOPE (Spotsylvania COunty Program for Enrichment), and many other programs.
It then goes on to talk more about the bill and what other programs will be affected.

stupid shithead
I hate people like that.
They also fail to realize that we save money for, ie, chancellor, cuz we aren't there utilizing their facilities.
laptops for each student? i wish
And everybody is supposed to be challenged in high school. Some, like us, need cgs. Otherwise, school would be much too easy and boring.
Well that just makes me sad :(
This is one of those issues where I take the seemingly non-communist side, everyone is not equal, and they should not be treated as if they are. But, remember the saying, "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." and we need to be academically challenged, so why shouldn't we be?
Of course, the writer of this article doesn’t seem to care about the money that is spent for special education. If he wants to treat everyone like they’re the same, (average) then he should be just as concerned about how those who are disabled are getting special assistance because of their needs. Of course, he isn't concerned about that, nobody would support that, but he finds it easy to blame "them gifted know-it-alls" for making his taxes too high, the idiot.
I really hope that that bill doesn’t pass. (That’s another example of legislation with a misleading name, the “higher education act” takes away higher education, how ironic…)
Also realize, guys, that this is not the first time this issue has come up. This was a issue back when CGS first opened, but nothing was really done about it. I suspect nothing will be done now, especially considering CGS is still considered a pioneer in teaching methods and such.
Okay. So. First: Its not our fault that the normal school isn't challenging enough for us.
Two: These "know-it-all" kids are the ones that will make a difference in this world. I think thats worth your damn taxes.
Third: It is also not our fault that since we need to be challenged we get better teachers and facilities.
The people who wrote this NEED TO DIE. Either that or just get some sense knocked into them. I think I might write a letter to someone about this. The little fuckers.
got that right.
haha
