I don't know if anyone checks this, or how many people check this, but I was thinking that we should all go visit CGS together over break. Anybody have any preference of the day?

Movies!

So apparently QUANTUM OF SOLACE came out the other day, and I still haven't seen it. I figure I'll hit up Regal some time next week, anyone interested in BONDing with me? (PS: there will be explosions, and maybe even females)

More importantly!
There's a new STAR TREK movie coming out! I love Star Trek! It's supposed to be about the early voyages of the Star Ship Enterprise, but so are about half the series. Spock is Sylas from Heroes, so it might take me a while to past the whole "he's a demon" thing, but I'm sure my love for Spock will outweigh my hatred for Sylas. Plus, he looks totally badass. Pics plz you ask? Of course you can!

The Raven Paradox

So, we've been talking about this in Philosophy, and I wanted to know what you all thought.

Basically, it starts with a few basic principles:

G1: Generalizations are confirmed by their instances. That is, if you have a hypothesis, any result that lends support to that thesis will confirm said theory--which does not mean it's irrefutable, just that it has some degree of confirmation.
E1: If two hypotheses are known to be logically equivalent, then any data that supports 1 also supports the other. This one kind of explains itself, and is easily seen.

Now, some generalizations:
R1: All Ravens are black things.
R2: All non-black things are non-Ravens.

L1: R1 and R2 are logically equivalent.

Now, then. That's all we need to lay out the paradox. And here it comes:
A sneaker is a non-black non-raven, therefore it lends support to R1; that all Ravens are black things.

Agree? Disagree?

Some proposed solutions/objections:

Solution 1: The conclusion the paradox comes up with is correct; we only find it so infeasible because we assume the degrees of support lent to be equal; that is, for one non-black thing to lend as much support as a black raven. However, they actually lend support equal to 1/(total number of objects). So one black raven out of, say, 6 million in the world would lend support equal to 1/6,000,000. However, there are trillions upon trillions upon trillions of non-black non-raven things. So the support one would lend to R1 would be small: on the order of 1/googol^(googol^(googol)), which is significantly less. It does lend support, but not nearly as much.

Objection 1: Not all generalizations are confirmed by their instances. For instance, take the theory that "All snakes are non-Irish." You go out, and start finding non-Irish snakes. First in proximity, but then further and further away. The more you find, and in the greater variety of ecosystems you find them (say you found them in, say, Scotland), the more likely you are to believe that they also dwell in Ireland. Therefore, this disproves the idea that all generalizations are confirmed by their instances.

Thoughts?

A Letter Home and Such

Dear Mom and Dad,

I apologize for not writing sooner. All my stationary was lost when the dorm burned down. I lost most of my stuff in the fire. But it's ok, because my vision is starting to come back, and Peter, the guy who saved me from the fire, offered to let me stay in his apartment. We love each other, so we'll be getting married this summer. I know how badly you guys wanted to be grandparents, and I'm happy to tell you that you'll be grandparents in just a few months!

Now, there was no dorm fire, no blindness, no Peter, no marriage, and I'm not pregnant. However, I'm failing English and have a D in Biology. I just thought you should see these in perspective.

Love,
Your Daughter,
XXXXXXXXXX

I hope you're all adjusting to college well. First of all, wondering if any of you were going to head up to Baltimore for the Rise Against show. And..thoughts on a name change?

Bored

No classes today for me (professor was sick) so I’m just sitting around all day. UVA’s pretty good so far, it’s too early to tell how much work all my classes are going to be, but I don’t think it’ll be enough to keep me occupied all the time. We have a Computer Game Developers club, which is really cool, but there’s really nothing going on right now.

There isn’t much happening on the blog either these days. I was looking back at the older posts and saw some of the lengthy discussions we used to have here. We used to talk about all kinds of interesting things. Mainly because I’m bored and I miss those interesting study halls from last year, I thought that we could start up some conversation here again. Anything would be fine, how about people’s thoughts about the Presidential election, a lot’s been happening in the last week or so...
Is everyone here voting?

Addresses

I know basically no one sends letters any more, but I still might. And therefore I was wondering if you could all post your dorm room address here in case I want to mail you or something. I'm starting an address book. Thank you!

I'll start it off:

Kevin Aswegan
5078 Pritchard East
Blacksburg , VA 24060-0023

And my room phone number, just for good measure, is:
(540) 232-2684

Thursday, August 07, 2008

Excuse my moment of utter cheeziness!

I'm not sure how many of you still read this, but for those of you who get the chance to:

I just wanted all of you to know how privileged I have felt to be a part of this class. I'm going to miss all of you terribly, and I am honestly the luckiest person in the world to be surrounded by such intelligent, warm, and loving people. So thank you friends. I know each and every one of you has something unexpected to bring to this world.

Peace&Love

Several people have asked me for the video I made for the CGS banquet so here it is:

Is anyone doing anything interesting over the summer? I know I'm not. I'm glad we still have this blog to communicate, even if we don't use it that often.

Graduation

Is tomorrow!

Wow, guys, we really did it.

Congrats!

Saturday, May 31, 2008

My bad guys, if all of you could come in on Monday sometime in the morning, that'd work. If Monday isn't good for you, let me know all you really gotta do is go in, slap some paint on your hands and throw your prints on the wall, wait for it dry and then sign your name. So really any time next week will work, unless you all want to go in together or something.

Say,

what about this mural thing? When are we all gonna go and put our handprints on it?

Eric and Stack's Love-child messin with Sasquatch!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpTXjxU3WLQ

Oh and i found this for all you guys that wanna know how to treat a woman the right way! Y BAR!!
Sometimes gamer guys spend too much time studying game strategies and forget how to keep their girlfriends. I was browsing through bulletins on Myspace and came across this helpful list on how to keep a girl. It was posted by a fellow gamer, so of course it’s a completely truthful list. If you guys go out there and actually attempt anything on this list, we are not responsible for the results. This is strictly for entertainment purposes and the actions should only be attempted by professionals like myself. I realize this isn’t big gaming news, but it’s Sunday and sometimes I just like to have fun with articles on slow weekends. If she happens to be a total psycho, then some of these things may actually work. If anyone ever needs advice on psycho girlfriends, I’m the guy to come to. The great list follows the break.

1. When she asks how she looks, shrug and say “could be better.”
This will keep her on her toes, and girls love that.

2. Never hold her hand. This can be interpreted as a sign of weakness.
If she grabs your hand, squeeze hers really hard until she cries (this
will impress her by showing her what a strong man you are).

3. Once a month, sneak up on her from behind and knock her over. Girls
are like dogs; they love to be roughed up.

4. Call her in the middle of the night to ask if she’s sleeping. If
she is, say “you better be.” Repeat this 4 or 5 times until morning. This will
show her you care.

5. When she is upset about something, suggest to her that it might be
her fault. This will pave the way for her own personal improvement, and
every girl needs some improvement.

6. Recognize the small things, as they usually mean the most. Then
when she’s sleeping, steal all her small things and break them, because
jewelry is for wussies and Asian ladies.

7. If you’re talking to another girl, make sure she’s looking. When
she is, stare into her eyes, mouth the words “**** you” and grab the other
girl’s ass. Girls love competition.

8. Tell her you’re taking her out to dinner. Drive for miles so she
thinks it’s going to be really special. Then take her to a burning tire yard.
When she starts to get upset, tell her you were just kidding and now you’re
really going to take her to dinner. Then drive her home. When she
starts crying and asks why you would do something like that, lean over and
whisper very quietly into her ear “…because I can.”

9. Introduce her to your friends as “some chick.” Women love those
special nicknames.

10. Play with her hair. Play with it HARD.

11. Warm her up when she’s cold…and not by giving her your jacket,
because then you might get cold. Rather, look her in the eye and say
“if you don’t stop bitching about the cold right now, you’re going to be
bitching about a black eye.” The best way to get warm is with fear.

12. Take her to a party. When you get there, she’ll have to go to the
bathroom (they always do). Leave immediately. Come back right when the
party is dying and yell at her the whole way home for ditching you all
night.

13. Make her laugh. A good way to do this is if she has a small pet.
Kick the pet. Guys always find stuff like that funny…why shouldn’t girls?

14. Let her fall asleep in your arms. When she’s fast asleep, wait 10
minutes, then jump up and scream in her ear. Repeat until she goes
home and you can use your arms for more important things (like basketball).

15. Spit often. I hear girls like guys that spit.

16. If you care about her, never ever tell her. This will only give
her self-confidence, then you can never turn her into the object she deep
down desires to be.

17. Every time you’re in her house, steal one of her shoes, earrings
or anything else that comes in pairs. Only take one of the pair. This
way, she’ll go crazy.

18. Take her out to dinner. Right when she’s about to order, interrupt
and say “no, she’s not hungry.” Make her watch you eat. Girls love a guy
that speaks for her.

19. Look her in the eyes and smile. Then punch her in the face. Girls
love a spontaneous guy.

20. Give her one of your t-shirts, and make sure it has your smell on
it (but not a sexy cologne smell…a bad smell. You know what I’m talking
about).

21. When it’s raining, keep asking her if she’s crying. She’ll say
“no, it’s just the rain.” Ten minutes later, turn to her and just scream at
her to stop crying. Girls like a tough man.

22. Titty twisters and plenty of them.

23. If you’re listening to music, and she asks to hear it, tell her
no. This way she’ll think you’re mysterious.

24. Remember her birthday, but don’t get her anything. Teach her that
material objects arent important. The only thing that’s important is
that she keeps you happy, and your happiness is the greatest present she
can ever get.

25. When she gives you a present on your birthday, Christmas or just
whenever, take it and tell her you love it. Then, next time you know
she’s coming over on a trash day, leave the trash can open and have the
present visibly sticking out of the can. Girls actually don’t like this one
that much, but guys think it’s funny.

26. If she’s mad at you for not calling her when you say you will,
promise her that you will call her at a certain time of the day. This will
make sure that she waits by the phone. Tell her when you call that you’re
going to tell her a special surprise. Now she’ll be really excited. Don’t
call

Japenese IQ Test!

Evidently they give this test to everyone applying for jobs in Japan?

EDIT: Here's a link to the full screen one, on Internet Explorer Blogger cuts off the edge so you can't send the cop back.

Ignore the Japenese and hit the big blue button to start.

Here are the rules:
-Everybody has to cross the river.
-Only 2 persons on the raft.
-Father can't be with Daughters without the Mother.
-The Mother can't be with Sons without the Father.
-The Thief can't be with anyone without the Policeman.
-Only the Father, Mother and Policeman can operate raft.

It's not as complicated as it sounds, and it's a pretty neat puzzle-- more advanced than the wolf/sheep/grain/farmer ones, anyway.
I figured it out, anyone else?

Yearbook Sales

Hey, guys. The yearbook's now on sale for $40. You can pay cash or check (made payable to CGS) to Mr. Morris, and in the next couple of days we'll have an online payment option as well.

I know it's a lot of money, but this is what we have to charge, according to the Jostens rep. The price will go up, however, after yearbooks come in, so make sure to preorder soon!

Thanks!

EDIT: You can now buy the yearbook online! Visit www.yearbooksonsale.com and search for CGS! (We're listed under Fredericksburg, not Spotsylvania.) Have a great weekend. ^_^

Also, Colin told me about this.

I know I've been doing a poor job as administrator recently, and for that I apologize. I realize that another administrator would be welcome and helpful.

This is bewilderment.

Sorry for wasting a post on this subject, but the choices for the music poll confuse me. First of all, who the hell are Spill Canvas and Split Fifty? Secondly... Trophy Scars and Paramore? Of the four choices we're given, I don't know two of them, and the other two are Trophy Scars and Paramore? Seriously. Come on.

That's all.

I Got This Yesterday...

And I thought I would share:

I sing the body and the blood of you
Of your lips
and of your eyes.
A thousand hearts I would give to you
So be mine
my Valentine.

I am the Harlequin. In my mask and my diamond covered garments, and the world is my masquerade.

There are many Harlequins, but I am yours this day.

Do you know the joy of the Harlequinade? The dance is simple, and as it ends we each change our costumes and we each change our roles.

A role is but an act, and a costume is but a mask. As for my own - it is yours also - for I am the love you had, the love you have and the love that you live only to dream for. I am everything, I am nothing, I am everyone’s... and I am yours and yours alone. No longer am I silenced, no longer restrained, for today is Valentine’s Day, and I am no longer a slave of mute longing. Today, and today only, I can sing and I can dance, and I do these things for you.

And behind this mask lies the face of every person who will ever love you.

And today, I give you my heart. Willingly and without restraint. And then after this dance, I must leave – for I have mischief to make and people to dream. That is my function, that is my purpose. That is the Harlequinade. I give you my heart, but its beat you must find alone. I tell you who I am, but you cannot see my face. This moment is forever ours, but it shall never be ours again in this way.

But know this.

A moment is eternal. And in this moment, our moment, you are loved. There are many ways to love, and many ways to be loved. I change shape and I change my dance, and I am found in many ways. Let us not be limited in either.

Let us dance freely, in whatever form our love takes. Let us pick our own special fruit from the tree of love, for each is as splendid as the next.

I sing from the shadows, and it is a sweet song. You will hear me if you listen, and you will see me if you look. I am waiting for you, even if I have already found you. Even if you are already mine or even if we are not to meet for years. Our next dance waits only for my unmasking, whenever it may be. But know, no matter the wait, be it hours days or years, that I am waiting for you to see me... and it more than your eyes you must look with.

And if you have already unmasked me, if you already know my face. Take but only the time to do it again and see if I am as you remember, for the mischief of the Harlequin makes fools of us all. And our dance changes with our role and costume. All that stays the same is our love.

And now, my dance continues, and it must continue alone. But I swear someday you will unmask me and see me as I am beneath a human face - and you will recognise me. Whether it is one you know or one that is new, one you expected or one you did not.

So Happy Valentine ’s Day, my love. You are perfect.

Do not reply to me, do not seek me in this visage, recall me only in your thoughts. For our dance must end, and I too must change my costume and my role... and as in a dream, this moment that is ours forever, alas, must end and be as tears in rain.

But never forget, never doubt and never question - you are loved.

Today Is...

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

That is all.

Physic Reviews

It's on Sunday,March 9th at 3:00

If you are coming you can just let me know, although just showing up would be okay becuase I know its way far in advance.

Find Satoshi!

Have you guys heard of this? These people picked a guy in Japan, distributed his name and his photograph, and are trying to see if anyone can find him. The only clues are his first name (Satoshi) and this photograph:

The Japanese on the left means "find me," and the background has been identified as Kayersberg, Alsace, France.

So, anyone know him?

According to the small world experiments, everyone on the planet is connected by an average of 6 people. You know someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows Satoshi, or anyone else for that matter. Weird, huh?

Spread the word!

Tuesday

There will be no physics review, I'm afraid.
Unless we can quickly think of another place to do it: the Salem Church Library is closed.
If not, I'll see if I can't come up with a place to hold it Thursday night, though that would be after are Wednesday quiz.

Don't forget to print off that sheet for stats..I can't upload a file, or post a link because it's password protected.

Football, again...

So are we having another football game on Monday or what? I do believe a rematch is in order. Same place, same time?

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

But Seriously

Senior gift ideas?

I'd completely forgotten about it until Colin brought it back up, but I think we should really start thinking about what we can do for our senior gift-- the year's halfway over.

I liked the mural, but I remember there being a problem, although I can't remember what specifically. Cost, perhaps? Anyway, I'm for something like that-- big, colorful, and something the teachers/students can see everyday. Like the quilt/coffee table/painting some of the other classes have done, but I can't think of anything except that mural.

Anyone else?

-Eric

Sunday, January 20, 2008

Alright...

Here's what I'm thinking.

We don't do a physics review after football. That way, we can all study for the stats and human geo. But we do a physics review on Tuesday, after school. We could go out to lunch, and just go over basic concepts. How's that sound?

Also...
We need to figure out what we're doing for a senior gift. To all of us, CGS has meant A LOT. We need to repay for it::how?

Physics Review..

Here's what I was thinking: I was going to do a review on Sunday morning (10 AM until whenever) but don't have a place. Maybe some restaurant/cafe?

And Monday. I want to do a physics review on Monday...after the football game, I suppose.

All this having been said, I wouldn't mind meeting some today, either. IM me..let me know.

Physics Review

There won't be a physics review tonight, though I could have one tomorrow night, if you guys needed/wanted to. I'd rather wait 'till this weekend, for a big one, but it's up to you.

Which brings me to my next point. This weekend: when should we have our physics review? I'm open to all times except Sunday night. Maybe Monday?
Also, where. We gotta figure that out to.

Stay tuned.

Stats Quiz

The Stats Quiz will be on Wednesday now, the one on Chap 7 and 8.1.

I was thinking about starting a new blog, dedicated solely to CGS homework and other helpful things pertaining only to CGS lessons and homework. What do you guys think?

Thermal Diffusion

For those of you attended the physics review, I want to apologize. I forgot to review an equation, though I'm not sure if it will be on the quiz tomorrow: thermal diffusion over an area.

The equation is simple enough:

P=KA((T1-T2)/L)

P is also seen as H on the equation sheet.
K is a constant, typically given, and different for various substances.
A is the area over which the heat is traveling.
T1 is the temperature of the hot side.
T2 is the temperature of the cold side.
L is the length over which the heat is traveling.
P comes out in calories per second (cal/s)

Per Request.

I will have a physics review tomorrow. The usual times for Sunday: 1:00 at the Salem Church Library. I'm willing to have it earlier, but I don't know where. We will have to find a new place to study, as the library will soon be closed for renovations. Suggestions welcome.

Bring whatever it is you need.

Happy New Year...

...and all that jazz.

I'm just posting to remind you that tomorrow, as we head back into school, at CGS, we will be having a 4-way. So, don't forget whatever it is we may need.

Here's to a great 2008.
