As much a sport as women's basketball? Or not?

Duh, Colin.

What makes you say that at 2:45 in the morning? I'm confused.

colin, we all know this and have no need for your random outbursts

We all know that cheerleading isn't a sport. Chess and Poker ARE sports though.

toni said...

Right. Cheerleading is'nt a sport just like horseback riding and marching band aren't sports...Mmmhmm.

I beg to differ.

Women's basketball is a sport. And as for the timing...

And Poker, Chess, and marching band are NOT SPORTS either.

Horseback riding is considered a sport, however

Marching band is too a sport.

If you had any idea how much weight a few of my friends lost during MB season you'd agree.

Or if you actually tried it. It is really flipping tiring, and a workout. Especially for my dear friends in the drumline. Try carrying a 15 or 20 pound drum while marching (which is also hard). I can't say much about me tho, since I'm a piccolo player, but I've tried marching with other stuff, and its hard. Seriously, its a sport. Just less of a sport than some others.

Marching band is not a sport. I'm sorry, but it isn't. It may be tiring, but chess can be tiring (in fact, it could be so tiring that you think too hard and your head explodes).

I have no doubt that its hard, but so is poker. It may include physical activity, but that does not make it a sport.

I'm sorry, Marching Band is NOT a sport. They are the people who play in the middle of the sport games.

Yes, one's head can explode during a game of chess, it's happened before. However chess is a sport.

Here are the things that make something a sport.

1. physical activity is involved
2. there is a way to score "points" and the points scored help determine the outcome
3. two or more people or teams must compete directly against each other and either one beats the others, or it's a draw (no judging to see who wins)

Therefore chess and poker are sports, cheerleading and marching band are not.

Colin. said...

CHESS AND POKER ARE NOT SPORTS.

Just because they involve a small amount of physical activity does not mean they are sports.

I'm sorry, but you are wrong. Again.

JohnC said...

A SMALL amount??? Do you know how hard it is to move those pieces during a timed game? They're weighted you know. And in poker, you have to keep that poker face! That's difficult to do, well for most people anyway.

toni said...

That is very true.

Yeah, sex is a sport. I never thought of it like that. There should be an NSL (National Sex League).

But seriously it's all symantics.
Here's the definition:
Sport: Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

So there you go. If you believe that marching band is a sport because its competitive, physical, and defined by a set of rules, then that is your choice.

After all that, I, however, do not believe that marching band, Poker, or cheerleading are sports. I know of no league or organisation that exists for these activities, well actually there is ncaa cheerleading, and there is the WPT.

OKAY, NEVERMIND, I'm just argueing with myself here. You can make your own decision.

Colin. said...

You should start that league kevin

toni said...

I would join it.

Kevin said...

Ok. It's started. I've collected a team. We travel around in competitions to other countries and make lots of prize money.
I know it sounds a lot like prositution. But it is. Not.

Thanxforthevenom said...

ill join if jessica simpson joins

toni said...

I'll join for free. But some perks would be...hmm....Johnny Depp. Orlando Bloom. Claudio Sanchez. Conor Oberst. :) Toni would be a happy little girl.

ok, u can lose 10 pounds walking around, but that does not make walking around a sport, soccer involves way more physical energy than marching band and so does every other sport, and its not called a marching game or match or anything and there are no rules, for the most part,u never run (speed walking does not count) and don't tell me that u do because i know from experience that it is physically impossible to run and play an instrument, its just like saying speed walking with a 8 pound weight is a sport, because its not, so end of discussion, ur wrong, we're right

Jake, there are rules for the competitions and it is possible to run and play an instrument, the drummers can. They take jogs alot.

jake said...

joggin is not running, and it is not a sport, it takes much less energy than playing a sport, and none of u would know because u don't play a sport

Colin. said...

Jake, i agree with you that marching band is not a sport, but i must ask you, please stop arguing ignorantly. You are only hurting our cause.

I do believe that marching band does require much physical activity and training and hard work, etc. , but i do not believe this constitutes it as a sport. However, i cannot conrol what you believe, i only ask that you do not argue it, and the argument will end in a 'truce', if you will, with neither side winning and neither side losing, each going off believing what they will.

toni said...

I agree.

*GOD WILL SAY YES!* <-thats a long story, dont ask

Kevin said...

Ooo Ooo I know! Colin, will you join the league if Conner Jones joins?!

Colin. said...

NO!

however...

Kevin said...

Why do you do that? Don't just say "However..." and then not follow it up with something. Don't leave us guessing, because trust me, what I think you meant is most likely much worse than what you actually did, so just fill in the blanks.

Colin. said...

Kevin, kevin, kevin...

I'll leave you to fill in the blanks

Kevin said...

Ok. I'll fill in the blanks. But you don't want to know what I put in them.

Colin. said...

No, kevin, i really don't
